UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending May 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial
claims was 315,000, a decrease of 25,000 from the previous week's revised
figure of 340,000. The 4-week moving average was 343,250, a decrease of 3,750
from the previous week's revised average of 347,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 24 was 2,935,000, a decrease of 69,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 3,004,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,977,750,
a decrease of 15,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,993,000.
UNADJUSTED DATAThe advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 280,417 in the week ending May 1, a decrease of 34,588 from the previous week. There were 377,383 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the
week ending April 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,934,769, a decrease of 102,684 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,621,019.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 17.
23,334 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending April 17.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,030 in the week ending April 24, a decrease of 18 from the prior week. There were 1,577 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 20 from the preceding week.
There were 16,907 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 17, an increase of 945 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,315, a decrease of 5 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 17 were in Alaska (5.9 percent), Puerto Rico (3.9), Oregon (3.6), Michigan (3.5), New Jersey (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.5), Rhode Island (3.3), Wisconsin (3.2), California (3.1), and Washington (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 24 were in Massachusetts (+5,228), Michigan (+2,458), North Carolina (+2,006), Connecticut (+1,781), and Florida (+587), while the largest decreases were in New York (-14,224), New Jersey (-4,510), Pennsylvania (-2,499), Wisconsin (-2,178), and South Carolina (-2,155).
