UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial
claims was 336,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised
figure of 347,000. The 4-week moving average was 343,500, an increase of 6,750
from the previous week's revised average of 336,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending July 24, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 24 was 2,911,000, a decrease of 35,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,946,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,900,000,
an increase of 13,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,887,000.
UNADJUSTED DATAThe advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 280,886 in the week ending July 31, a decrease of 35,961 from the previous week. There were 333,770 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the
week ending July 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number
for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,823,796, a decrease
of 113,271 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent
and the volume was 3,508,332.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 17.
5,105 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending July 17.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,446 in the week ending July 24, a decrease of 542 from the prior week. There were 2,099 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 221 from the preceding week.
There were 16,608 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 17, a decrease of 328 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,043, an increase of 300 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 17 were in Michigan (4.3 percent), Puerto Rico (4.2), Alaska (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.4), New Jersey (3.3), Oregon (3.1), Rhode Island (3.1), Massachusetts (2.9), Connecticut (2.8), Arkansas (2.7), and California (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 24 were in
Delaware (+746), Nevada (+199), Colorado (+88), New Mexico (+85), and Vermont
(+54), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-9,003), North Carolina
(-7,928), Indiana (-7,665), New York (-5,855), and Missouri
(-5,326).
