UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial
claims was 369,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week's revised
figure of 351,000. The 4-week moving average was 343,500, an increase of 2,250
from the previous week's revised average of 341,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Sept. 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 18 was 2,873,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,876,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,875,250,
a decrease of 1,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,876,500.
UNADJUSTED DATAThe advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 280,863 in the week ending Sept. 25, an increase of 5,193 from the previous week. There were 304,968 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the
week ending Sept.18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number
for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,404,827, a decrease
of 68,160 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent
and the volume was 3,001,023.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 11.
1,790 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,466 in the week ending Sept. 18, an increase of 130 from the prior week. There were 2,298 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 347 from the preceding week.
There were 15,948 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 11, a decrease of 889 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 26,320, an increase of 115 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 11 were in Puerto Rico (3.3 percent), Alaska (3.2), New Jersey (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.8), Oregon (2.6), California (2.5), Massachusetts (2.5), Michigan (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), New York (2.3), Rhode Island (2.3), and Washington (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 18 were in Florida (+8,797), California (+4,583), North Carolina (+4,194), Georgia (+2,139), and New Jersey (+1,591), while the largest decreases were in Kentucky (-1,775), Puerto Rico (-1,321), Indiana (-814), Alabama (-689), and Oklahoma (-522).
