UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 319,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 312,000. The 4-week moving average was 320,500, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 324,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending June 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 25 was 2,581,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,597,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,603,000, a decrease of 250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,603,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 325,672 in the week ending July 2, an increase of 38,206 from the previous week. There were 349,920 initial claims in the comparable week in 2004.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending June 25, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,423,460, an increase of 18,803 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,741,743.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 18.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,558 in the week ending June 25, an increase of 170 from the prior week. There were 2,109 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 17 from the preceding week.

There were 12,936 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 18, a decrease of 77 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,270, a decrease of 22 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 18 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (3.7), Michigan (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), Oregon (2.8), New Jersey (2.6), Arkansas (2.4), California (2.3), Massachusetts (2.3), and Wisconsin (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 25 were in New Jersey (+6,579), Massachusetts (+2,491), Connecticut (+1,670), New York (+1,618), and Kentucky (+1,146), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-4,809), Pennsylvania (-4,065), Wisconsin (-1,965), North Carolina (-1,774), and Tennessee (-1,132).
