UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 332,000, an increase of 19,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 313,000. The 4-week moving average was 317,250, an increase of 8,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 308,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending July 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 1 was 2,429,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,447,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,425,250, an increase of 2,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,423,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 416,542 in the week ending July 8, an increase of 112,799 from the previous week. There were 427,323 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending July 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,219,848, a decrease of 41,466 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,410,697.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,682 in the week ending July 1, an increase of 264 from the prior week. There were 1,937 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, unchanged from the preceding week.

There were 12,391 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 24, an increase of 567 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,384, a decrease of 135 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 24 were in Puerto Rico (3.7 percent), Alaska (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.0), Michigan (2.9), Rhode Island (2.6), New Jersey (2.5), Arkansas (2.3), Connecticut (2.3), Massachusetts (2.3), and Oregon (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 1 were in Kentucky (+6,153), New York (+4,220), Indiana (+3,954), Michigan (+2,806), and Pennsylvania (+1,968), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-7,197), Florida (-1,291), California (-1,191), Missouri (-1,174), and Delaware (-933).
